<div style="text-align: justify;">
We review the present status of black hole thermodynamics. Our review includes discussion of classical black hole thermodynamics, Hawking radiation from black holes, the generalized second law, and the issue of entropy bounds. A brief survey also is given of approaches to the calculation of black hole entropy. We conclude with a discussion of some unresolved open issues.</div>

Robert M. Wald (born June 29, 1947, New York City) is a physicist who specializes in general relativity and the thermodynamics of black holes. He is well known as the author of a widely used graduate textbook, General Relativity (ISBN 0-226-87033-2). Wald is a professor at the Enrico Fermi Institute and the University of Chicago. Wald has taught undergraduate courses across a broad range of physics topics, and has been honored as a particularly effective teacher.</div>
